Bachelor of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology

Audiology is the study and treatment of hearing impairments and balance disorders. Ear is one of our vital sense organs. Audiologists are experts in medical management of Hearing and Balance systems. They specialize in the study of normal and impaired hearing, prevention of hearing loss, identification and assessment of hearing and balance problem rehabilitation of persons with hearing and balance disorders.

Speech language pathologists work with complete range of human communication and all its disorders. They use diagnostics equipments, tools and protocols to evaluate and diagnose speech defects, language disorders, swallowing disorders and cognitive issues in individuals of all ages from infant to elderly. The treatments of all the diagnosed disorders are done using various therapeutic techniques, equipments and multi modal approach.

ELIGIBILTY

For admission to BASLP course under IHS, the applicant must be:
  • Age limit- No Age Limit
  • Qualification - Minimum +2 Science (12th standard or Higher Secondary School Certificate from any recognized board or university) with physics, chemistry & Mathematics/Biology.
  • The applicant should have 50% marks in their qualifying examination.
  • Those, whose results of qualifying exam are awaited, can also apply.
  • The applicant shall face an Aptitude Test and shall be admitted on the basis of the test/interview.

SCOPE OF AUDIOLOGY & SLP

Audiologist and Speech Language Pathologist in medical colleges, rehabilitation colleges, work in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, centre for children with special needs or can do private clinical practices. They indulge in research and development to enhance knowledge about normal hearing, normal human communication, develop evaluation and treatment protocols of hearing disorders, speech and language disorders. They work on voice and speech synthesis, speech recognition and such other man machine interface.

CURRICULUM

Bachelor in Audiology and Speech Language Pathology (BASLP) is a 4 year degree course. It is multi disciplinary profession with core subjects of speech pathology, language pathology and audiology. The medical subjects like anatomy, physiology, pathology, neurology, otolaryngology, paediatrics and non-medical subjects like linguistics, psychology, electronics and acoustics are integral part of this degree programme. This graduate level course is supported by classroom lectures, demonstrations, seminars, workshops, journal clubs and clinical conferences. The practical sessions are supervised by clinical supervisors and guided by the faculty. The course content is continuously updated with the latest trends by the direction of RCI, New Delhi.

TERM AND EXAMINATION

The course commence in the month of July. There will a short mid-term puja vacation and summer vacation at the end of academic year. The students have to work half of summer vacation period in the clinic and take leave of the other half. There will be two parts of the examination. The mid-term examination and the annual examinations are held every academic year. The internal midterm exam will be for 20% of the total marks for the each paper. The clinical competence shall be evaluated on the basis of the recommendation of the clinical supervisors. The motivation competence therapeutics records and overall attitude will be evaluated for awarding clinical marks. The rules and the examination patterns may changed from time to time depending on the university guidelines and those of the government and RCI, New Delhi

They deal with all kind of communication disorders (speech defect like shuttering, voice disorder etc.), Language disorder (autism, learning disability, aphasia etc.), hearing impaired ( all ages) , Vestibular disorder , swallowing disorders , cognitive disorder, occupational health hazards , social communication needs etc. Students of IHS are working in reputed hospitals and medical establishments in most of the important cities in India. Some of them have gone abroad like Australia, Doha etc. Highly remunerative and definite employment possibilities are created for IHS students by the placement cell.
