Scope of Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (BOT)

Occupational Therapists work in diverse settings, including hospitals, rehabilitation hospitals, psychiatric hospitals, offices and clinics, school systems, nursing homes, and home health agencies, treating the physical, mental, developmental, and emotional ailments that impact a patient's ability to perform daily tasks. An occupational therapist's role is to support individuals to overcome the effects of decreased functioning caused by illness, aging, and/or accident so that they can carry out everyday tasks or occupations, be it physical, psychological, social, or environmental.

Eligibility

For admission to the BOT course under IHS, the following criteria must be met:

  • Candidates should have passed 10+2 (higher secondary) or equivalent examination of any state or national council/board of education with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate.
  • Candidates should have studied Science subjects i.e. Physics, Chemistry & Biology as their main subject.
  • Candidates should be at least 17 years of age.

Application procedure for admission

To get admission at IHS, interested candidates must undergo the IMAT examination. The IHS Medical Aptitude Test (IMAT) is a national-level entrance exam for admissions to undergraduate (UG) courses. Based on the IMAT score, they shall proceed with the admission process, starting off with the seat booking, followed by counselling. All admissions that commence in the upcoming academic year shall be through the IMAT.

For applying to IMAT you must:
  • Go to the Institute of Health Sciences website at ihs.ac.in
  • Click on the Apply Online IMAT tab
  • Enter your name and other details.
  • Upload the required certificate files.
  • Pay the IMAT application fee of ₹2,000.
  • A counselor will review your documents and confirm your application for IMAT.
  • You will be guided to attend the entrance test. Your admission shall be based on the merit list in the IMAT entrance test.
Term and exam for Occupational Therapy

The BOT program commences in July, following the syllabus endorsed by the university. The graduates undergo eight semesters of coursework, clinical exposure, and practical training, followed by six months of internship. Each semester comprises specific theory and practical papers in Occupational Therapy. Marks are allocated based on internal assessments and mid-term exam scores. While the university administers semester exams for theory papers, clinical assessments are conducted jointly by internal and external examiners. On completion of the course, they receive a degree from the university, enabling them to practice as licensed therapists.
